'Insane' manager now open to taking Wolves job instead of Gary O'Neil, Fosun want him - report

Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards would consider a return to Wolves following Vitor Pereira’s sacking on Sunday, journalist Graeme Bailey has claimed.

The 42-year-old manager is believed to be among the names Wolves are considering for the Molineux vacancy, with former boss Gary O’Neil out of the running.

Wolves are understood to have done background work on Edwards, who spent four years at the West Midlands club as a player and also had a spell as interim manager in 2016.

The Welsh tactician is believed to have a release clause in his contract with Middlesbrough, which is not thought to be an obstacle for Wolves, who are hoping to make a new appointment in time for Saturday’s visit to Chelsea.

According to Bailey, while Edwards is not the only candidate Wolves are considering for the managerial vacancy at Molineux, he is highly regarded internally:

“I am told that Edwards’ release is not something that would frighten off any Premier League club. The problem Boro have is that Edwards has a really strong connection with Wolves and they do like him.

“He is not the only candidate and with the international break coming next week, they don’t need to get their new guy in this weekend but they do want him in sooner, rather than later.”

Edwards, who retired from professional football in 2013, started his coaching career at Wolves, taking charge of the Under-18s the following year.

He also had spells with the Under-23s and the first team, briefly acting as interim head coach following Walter Zenga’s sacking in October 2016.

Prior to his appointment at Middlesbrough in July, Edwards also managed Forest Green Rovers, Watford and Luton, leading the latter to Premier League promotion in the 2022/23 season.

The 42-year-old has enjoyed a positive start to life at the Riverside Stadium, losing only twice in 13 Championship games, with the club currently sitting second in the table, three points below leaders Coventry.

Wolves, meanwhile, are rock bottom of the Premier League table, having failed to secure a win in any of their 10 games this season.

The Molineux side parted ways with Pereira following Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Fulham, with the Portuguese tactician lasting less than 12 months in the role.
