Chelsea have spoken to defender Wesley Fofana after he was handed 300 hours of community service for dangerous driving. The French centre-back was given the punishment after pleading guilty following an offence in April, and appeared in court last week.

The Crown Prosecution Service has released footage of the incident, which occurred not far from the Premier League club's Cobham training ground. Fofana, 24, has come in for criticism and Chelsea have stepped in.

According to The Athletic, the Blues felt Fofana's behaviour warranted a meeting. He had already been handed a driving ban in May for unrelated speeding offences, with the ban issued in May and lasting until May 13, 2027.

He was handed a separate 18-month driving ban following the latest dangerous driving charge. The Athletic also reports that district judge Julie Cooper issued a punishment of £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge

“At the end of the disqualification you cannot drive until you pass an extended driving test and if you drive as a disqualified driver you will almost certainly be sent to prison and that is career-ending,” Judge Cooper is quoted as saying.

Road safety charity Brake has also commented on the matter. Brake, per their website, are targeting: "A world with zero road death and injury, where we can all move in a safe and healthy way, whoever we are and however we travel."

"It is disappointing to see people disregarding speeding restrictions and not giving the road and road users the full respect they need," Brake's Luca Straker told The Athletic. “Every car is a large piece of machinery that has the capacity to kill or seriously injure someone.

"Every day, we see the devastating consequences of road crashes through our work with families needing the support of our National Road Victim Service. It is important for any person in a position of influence to act responsibly in these situations, so that those who look up to them can follow their example.”

Fofana joined Chelsea from Leicester for an initial £70million in 2022 but has struggled with injuries during his time at Stamford Bridge. He missed the entire 2023/24 campaign thanks to an ACL tear and has played just six times this season - four of those outings coming in the league.

He also started the Blues' last Champions League match, a 5-1 victory over Ajax at Stamford Bridge. Next up for the reigning Conference League champions is a trip to Azerbaijan to face Qarabag.

Another player with recent injury issues, Romeo Lavia, is being eased back in after continuing his comeback trail against Tottenham on Saturday. "[Romeo] is training with us, is okay and is 100 per cent fit, but we have to be careful with him because we don’t want him out again. We want him to enjoy being a football player," manager Enzo Maresca said of the midfielder.
