Report: Cleveland Browns Trade Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to Chicago Bears

As first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cleveland Browns have agreed to a trade before the deadline on Tuesday. They are sending defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to the Chicago Bears along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

The Bears had been actively seeking pass rush help in the wake of a season-ending injury to Dayo Odeyingbo. Tryon was signed as a free agent to bolster the Browns pass rush. The hope was that he could end up reclaiming some of the promise he had when he was a first round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, perhaps operating as the team's third option and a pass rush threat.

However, by the start of the season, Tryon found himself as fifth on the depth chart. Beyond Myles Garrett, both Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire were ahead of him. Cameron Thomas, a waiver claim added the previous season and a former third-round selection by the Arizona Cardinals had also surpassed him on the depth chart.

To this point, Tryon has only registered 31 snaps on the season. He was able to register three pressures on 14 pass rush opportunities, but he was clearly expendable. Tryon gets a chance to get on the field to contribute for a team.

The Browns make a slight improvement on draft capital. Now instead of three seventh-round selections, they have one sixth and two in the seventh. The seventh-round selection the Browns sent to the Bears in the deal came from the Jacksonville Jaguars in the deal that involved corners Greg Newsome Tyson Campbell. It originally belonged to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Browns have two first round selections, including the one acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars, a second round, third and fourth. They also have a second, third, and fourth as well as two fifth round selections.

The team could make another move or simply stand pat and opt to fill the roster spot created by this trade to promote someone from the practice squad, likely on the defensive line. Sam Kamara or Julian Okwara could fit the bill. Given how little Tryon was utilized, the Browns likely weren't going to be inclined to try to re-sign him in free agency. As a result, when the opportunity to get something for him came along, they took it.

The Browns are currently preparing to come off their bye week, going on the road to face the New York Jets. The Jets also made a deal, sending their star corner Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for two first round picks and wide receiver AD Mitchell. The Jets, who currently have a 1-8 record, have just traded away arguably the biggest star on their roster.
