EFL club in love with Leeds United star, they're proving a point to Daniel Farke

Leeds United loaned out Joe Gelhardt in the summer to Hull City, and now he’s one of the Championship’s best attacking threats.

Scoring and creating goals is an obvious area for improvement as things stand, with Daniel Farke struggling to get a tune out of his current options.

Transfer decisions in the summer didn’t help, as Leeds failed to land a right-winger. What’s ironic is a forward they loaned out is flying off the right-wing.

Joe Gelhardt in sensational Hull City form away from Leeds United – another goal scored at the weekend

It seems like every week I’m finding myself keeping an eye on what Joe Gelhardt’s doing away from Leeds at Hull City.

Many expected the Tigers to struggle this season after their transfer fee restriction in the summer. But, the loan signing of ‘Joffy’ among other transfers have spring-boarded them into an unlikely playoff charge.

Having already scored five and assisted once prior to the weekend, Gelhardt netted the opener with a fine goal away at Norwich City to continue his stunning loan spell.

His impact at the MKM Stadium has been massive. Hull City have recently changed their X cover photo to Gelhardt and their bio to: “Welcome to the Joffy appreciation society page”.

Joe Gelhardt one of the Championship’s best attackers as Leeds United watch on

Profiling Gelhardt has been a tough ask ever since he broke through at Leeds. He’s not a lone number nine, he’s not a creative 10, and he’s not seen as a typical wide option.

However, Sergej Jakirovic is finding joy in having Gelhardt drifting out to the right.

Stats (FotMob, FBRef) Figure Ch’ship rank

Goals + assists 7 9th

Ironically, it’s perhaps the weakest position in Leeds’ lineup right now, after the failure to sign Facundo Buonanotte or Harry Wilson in August.

Of course, Gelhardt didn’t seem ready to consistently make an impact under Farke in the Championship, so it’s not a case of him suddenly being good enough to transform our attack in the Premier League.

That being said, it goes to show the talent that Gelhardt possesses and when given trust in a role and system that suits him, he will thrive.

Perhaps it could be a lesson that some players aren’t lacking in quality under Farke, but are just not being given the platform they need to succeed.
