As the Chicago Bulls look to bounce back from their first loss of the season at the hands of the New York Knicks, team insider KC Johnson has shared a concerning update on Coby White.
White, who has yet to take the floor this season due to a calf strain, was set to be re-evaluated on Monday after experiencing tightness during a five-on-five scrimmage just over two weeks ago.
According to Johnson, however, the standout guard has yet to return to team scrimmages ahead of Tuesday’s showdown with the Philadelphia 76ers.
During Tuesday’s installment of “The Fastbreak” on Chicago Sports Network, Johnson dished on the situation:
“I can tell you that he has not scrimmaged since two weeks ago, Saturday, when he experienced tightness in that calf following that first five-on-five scrimmaging experience. … The fact that he has not returned to the practice court seems to suggest this is going to be a longer term issue.”
As Johnson went on to explain, both White and the Bulls’ medical staff are taking a, quote, “big picture view” on the injury, prioritizing the former UNC guard’s long-term health over a quick return.
So far this season, Chicago has jumped out to a 5-1 record despite the absence of White, who averaged a career-high 20.4 points on 45.3% from the field last season.
While the team has been without one of its most prolific offensive threats, Chicago currently leads the NBA in assists per game with 30.2.
Heading into tonight’s showdown with the 76ers, Billy Donovan’s squad will also notably be without two-way guard Ayo Dosunmu, who has averaged a career-high 16.2 points per game this season.
Whether the Bulls can get back in the win column and claim the top spot in the Eastern Conference, only time will tell.
