Opinion: Rob Edwards must attempt glaringly obvious Wolves transfer if Molineux chiefs opt to appoint him

Wolves are still in the process of appointing a new boss after they sacked Vitor Pereira on Sunday afternoon – and with talk of Rob Edwards potentially moving into the Molineux role, that could see the former Wales international make an obvious move in the transfer market.

Wolves remain winless in the Premier League, having drawn just two of their games so far this season. Sat on two points after 10 games, the writing appears to be on the wall for their top-flight survival hopes, unless a new boss can come in to turn their form around.

Wolves sacked Vitor Pereira as a result, resulting in the fourth managerial replacement of the season after Nottingham Forest’s double-sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo and Ange Postecoglou, as well as Graham Potter being given the boot by West Ham United.

TBR Football understands that Rob Edwards is in the pipeline as an option to replace the Portuguese gaffer, and if he does make the move back to Molineux after spending time there as a player, it could be that he goes for Hayden Hackney in a raid of his current club, Middlesbrough.

TBR Football understands that Rob Edwards is ‘very much’ in Wolves’ thinking for their new head coach after being snubbed by former boss Gary O’Neil.

Wolves have done their work on Edwards, having taken Luton Town to the Premier League in the 2022/23 campaign via the playoffs, before leaving in last season’s Championship after a poor start to the season.

He’s found a new home at Middlesbrough, and the Teesside outfit currently sit in second in the table with hopes of a return to the Premier League for the first time in a decade.

And, just last week, TBR Football further understood that there was Premier League interest emerging in Hackney after yet another consistent Championship start.

Tottenham and Manchester United checked up on Hackney last season, but Newcastle have been watching his progress in recent weeks.

They all represent strong options, but with the likes of Brentford and Fulham also keen, that shouldn’t rule Wolves out.

If Edwards makes the move to Molineux, he could rely on Hackney to join him and resuscitate Wolves’ Premier League status.

Hayden Hackney could well turn Wolves down thanks to their poor Premier League start

Although Wolves would give Hayden Hackney the chance to play in the Premier League, there is every chance that he would turn the Molineux outfit down.

Hackney is a player who is destined to be in the Premier League, having already racked up over 125 appearances for the Riverside Stadium outfit, scoring 12 goals along the way.

Playing a key role in England’s Under-21 Euros triumph by assisting Harvey Elliott’s semi-final winner, the Premier League talent is there but with Wolves in turmoil, Hackney may be better waiting and biding his time.

We’ve seen the likes of Leicester City and Southampton struggle this season after being relegated from the Premier League, while Luton Town and Sheffield United are both tumbling after being relegated in the 2023-24 campaign.

There is no guarantee that Wolves will bounce straight back and if Hackney does turn down a move, he could be flooded with offers in the summer.

However, that Premier League chance – with a shot at survival – could be all he needs to secure regular minutes either at Wolves in the top-flight, or elsewhere next season.
