The Boston Celtics faced off against the Utah Jazz on Monday night at TD Garden.
In a game that went down to the wire, it was Utah who pulled away with a two-point victory because of a Jusuf Nurkić bucket off a last-second offensive rebound to put them up with just .6 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Boston’s kryptonite has been their rebounding, especially letting up offensive rebounds, but Monday night it was something different.
In their 105-103 defeat, the Celtics shot 11-of-51 from three-point range, translating to 21.6 percent.
Of all games in NBA history where a team has taken over 50 three-point attempts, that is the single-worst shooting performance.
Boston’s identity over the past few years has been their three-point shooting, as they have revolutionized the game with the amount they take per game.
Unfortunately, Monday night wasn’t their night, as nothing was clicking.
Specifically, in the third quarter, they allowed Utah to crawl back after holding a ten-point lead going into halftime.
They shot just 1-of-11 from three in the third quarter, which contributed heavily to their all-time worst percentage.
Jayson Tatum’s absence has forced players like Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and Sam Hauser to create their own shots, which they haven’t been great at.
So far this season, from three-point range, those three have shot 25%, 18%, and 45%, respectively.
Tatum’s gravity has been missing, leading to some games where the Celtics can’t get it going.
Boston will look to bounce back and adjust after their loss against Utah, and hopefully not be on the wrong side of history moving forward.
