Liverpool continued their return to form with an impressive 1-0 Champions League victory at home to Real Madrid on Tuesday evening. Alexis Mac Allister scored the only goal shortly after the hour to ensure Trent Alexander-Arnold's first return since leaving for the Bernabeu in the summer ended in defeat.

The result means Arne Slot's side have now taken nine points from 12 at the halfway stage of the opening stage and are in the running to secure a top-eight place and direct qualification to the knockout rounds.

The ECHO was in attendance at Anfield and here we run the rule over the performance of the Liverpool players.

Giorgi Mamardashvili 7

Unemployed until saving with feet from Bellingham shortly before half-time. Watched a good game second half.

Conor Bradley 9

Dominated the tricky and controversial Vinicius Jnr to such an extent he still found time to break forward regularly. Superb showing against Real once again.

Ibrahima Konate 7

Solid enough in defence and kept compatriot Mbappe quiet before break. Got the crowd going with some agricultural tackles and clearances.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Real offered a different kind of threat offensively and skipper was comfortable enough for most part. Saw header brilliantly saved by Courtois second half.

Andy Robertson 8

Recovered one mistake with challenge on Guler and otherwise decent at both ends, particularly with calm defending as Real pressed during final quarter. Subbed.

Ryan Gravenberch 7

Somewhat more quiet than at the weekend with most of his job plugging gaps first half. Extremely disciplined after break and some good defensive blocks.

Alexis Mac Allister 8

Among those to test Courtois before break and willing to get in among Real midfielders. Excellent header for opener but had to be careful after booking. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 7

Didn’t always have it his own way up against Valverde but kept going back for more and a threat whenever in possession.

Dominik Szoboszlai 9

A couple of panicky passes aside, drove forward impressively and prompted two good and one great save from Courtois before set-piece delivery for opener. Another superb showing.

Florian Wirtz 8

Decent discipline to stay on the left and worked so hard, winning back possession regularly. Good passes and created chance for Szoboszlai. Subbed.

Hugo Ekitike 7

Threatened intermittently and appeared to have run of defenders, but not enough time in centre forward position. Much better second half when keeping ball and denied by Courtois before heading wide. Subbed.

SUBS

Curtis Jones (for Mac Allister 79) 6

Added to Liverpool's resolve in midfield.

Cody Gakpo (for Ekitike 76) 7

Played very much like someone who didn't fancy being benched again any time soon.

Milos Kerkez (for Robertson 88)

Clobbered by Tchouameni.

Federico Chiesa (for Wirtz 88)

Teased Real with some fancy touches.
