A little over a year ago, the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks made a seismic trade that sent the Timberwolves’ longtime franchise player, Karl-Anthony Towns, away in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round pick that eventually became Joan Beringer.
As it stands now, the trade appears to have paid off for both franchises, as they each advanced to the Conference Finals a season ago. While the road to get there was bumpy, all the players involved have settled in with their new team, especially Julius Randle, who is coming off his first triple-double with the Wolves.
Wednesday night brings another opportunity to revisit that trade as the Timberwolves and Knicks face off in New York at Madison Square Garden at 6:30 PM CT. Anthony Edwards, who has missed the past four games with a hamstring strain, may be returning from the injured list for the game, as he is currently listed as questionable on the team’s injury report.
If Edwards can play, it sets up a stellar cross-conference matchup with both teams striving to make the NBA Finals this season. Even if the Timberwolves superstar is not able to suit up, the matchup with the Knicks should be a far more entertaining game than the Wolves’ previous two games against the tanking Charlotte Hornets and Brooklyn Nets.
Last season, the two teams each won on the other team’s home court with Towns torching the Wolves for 32 points in his triumphant return to Target Center. The Timberwolves returned the favor a few months later with Edwards putting up 36 points at MSG.
