The 2023 first-round pick was traded from the Cowboys along with a 2026 second-round pick and 2017 first-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, the No. 3 overall pick in 2019 and a three-time Pro Bowler.

Dallas (3-5-1) upgraded its defensive front with the addition of Williams and paid a hefty price to do so. Meanwhile, the Jets (1-7) add significant draft capital and will look to unlock some of Smith’s potential.

The Grand Rapids native was a two-time all-Big Ten selection at Michigan and was selected 26th overall in 2023. He has had a lackluster start to his career, though. His snap share had dropped from 48% in 2024 to 25% this season, and he’s registered just three tackles in five games.

Dallas scratched him Monday night for its 27-17 loss to the Cardinals. In 39 career games (20 starts), Smith has 57 tackles and two sacks.

Meanwhile, Williams has 59 tackles for loss and 40 sacks over seven NFL seasons.
