NBA report confirms referees missed crucial call in Celtics loss to Jazz

Jaylen Brown was furious after the Celtics lost to the Jazz on Monday because he thought the officials missed a foul call on Keyonte George. Turns out, Brown was right. The NBA released in its last two minute report Tuesday that the officials should’ve called a foul on George as part of the controversial play.

Per the report, “George (UTA) slips and falls into Brown’s (BOS) path, tripping Brown” with 50.4 seconds left in the Monday’s game. Here’s a look at the play. George slips and fouls Brown, which resulted in a fast-break score for the Jazz on the other end.

After the game, crew chief Kevin Scott explained in a pool report why there was no foul call on George.

“During live play the crew observed George slip and fall just prior to Brown slipping on the same spot resulting in the ball becoming loose prior to any contact,” Scott said.

The Celtics lost to the Jazz 105-103 with Jusuf Nurkic’s put-back bucket with 0.6 seconds left being the difference. The C’s had their chances to win, and the officials missing a call didn’t help. But they were also heavily outrebounded by the Jazz and had a brutal shooting night, which all contributed to the loss.

Here’s what Brown had to say postgame as he was furious with the officials:

“Man, y’all going to get me fined because you can’t have a mistake like that as an official at that point in the game,” he said. “It’s fourth quarter. There’s a minute left in the game or less. And you completely — the whole staff blows the (expletive) call, you know what I mean? It cost us the game. Unacceptable.

“You can make mistakes at any point of the game, but right there, that wasn’t good. That wasn’t good. That was unacceptable. And then they’re telling me like, ‘Aw, we didn’t see it.’ How did none of you see it? You can’t trip somebody in the fourth quarter and then just be a no call. It’s some (expletive).”
