NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans Pelicans broke from the ranks of the winless Tuesday night (Nov. 4), holding off the visiting Charlotte Hornets, 116-112, to avoid an 0-7 start to the season.
With the victory, the 1-6 Pelicans left the Brooklyn Nets (0-7) as the only team yet to win this season.
Trey Murphy III poured in 21 points to lead eight New Orleans players scoring in double figures.
Jose Alvarado added 18, Saddiq Bey had 17, Karlo Matkovic 13, Derik Queen 12 and then Herb Jones, Jordan Poole and Jeremiah Fears added 11 apiece.
Miles Bridges had a game-high 22 for the Hornets (3-5), who had a two-point lead at 112-110 until Alvarado buried a 3-pointer with 16. 1 seconds left in the game.
Charlotte failed to score again, but Murphy hit two free throws and Bey one of two with 5.3 left to provide the final margin.
The Pelicans announced before the game that star forward Zion Williamson will be sidelined at least 7-10 days as he recovers from a strained left hamstring.
