Stuart McCall raves about Everton teenager Harrison Armstrong
PNE assistant manager Stuart McCall spent three years as an Everton player after signing from Bradford City in 1988.
McCall played and scored twice in the 1989 FA Cup final, as Everton sadly lost to Liverpool at Wembley.
McCall is now helping develop Armstrong, and has certainly liked what he has seen so far.
MORE EVERTON STORIES
Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, McCall admitted that he has been impressed with Armstrong’s maturity.
McCall even struck a comparison to former Everton star Phil Jagielka in terms of his maturity as a teenager.
McCall studied Armstrong closely over the summer, but admitted that the Everton teenager is actually better than he expected.
“Yeah, he’s doing okay, but he needs to stay with us until the end of the season – there’s no doubt about that,” said McCall.
“At the end of the season, I got about 14 midfielders to look at from the recruitment department. I went through them all, and Harrison was the one who stood out.
“I thought he would be good when we managed to get him, and I know we had to wait until the last day, but he’s probably been better than I would have imagined.
“We saw him against Mansfield in the cup for Everton, and I thought they might keep him in, he created two goals that night.
“The last time I saw somebody as mature as that at that age was Phil Jagielka, when I was at Sheffield United. I went there as an old man at 38, and Jags was just in the first team, about 18, 19 years old.
“Jags was very mature for a young kid, and I see a lot of that in Harrison,” he added.
How Everton fans can watch Harrison Armstrong
PNE are back in action on Wednesday night, hosting Swansea City at Deepdale.
Armstrong could start once again, especially as North End midfielder Ali McCann is out with an arm injury.
Everton supporters will be keen to see Armstrong in action, and the game against Swansea can be viewed on Sky Sports+.
The game will kick off at 19:45 on Wednesday night, and Armstrong will be looking to continue his fine form.
Armstrong is unlikely to be recalled by Everton in January, but he could be a player who pushes for first-team action next season if he continues to develop under McCall.
