Joe Buck reacts as Eddie Howe previews Newcastle United v Athletic Club
Newcastle United news: Becky Langley has released a statement following her departure as Newcastle United Women’s manager.
Former Newcastle United Women’s manager Becky Langley has released a statement following her departure from the club. Langley’s departure from Newcastle United was confirmed last month with the Magpies sat 9th in the WSL2 table.
Langley had been in charge for six years and led the club as they turned professional following the change in ownership back in 2021. During that time, Langley guided her side to back-to-back promotions, narrowly missing out on an historic third promotion in a row last season.
Newcastle United Women remain searching for Langley’s replacement ahead of games against Durham and local rivals Sunderland. The latter of those will be played at St James’ Park on Sunday 16 November (2pm kick-off).
Becky Langley releases statement after Newcastle United departure
Following her departure from Newcastle United, a club she had spent the last six years at, Langley, via the League Manager’s Association (LMA) released a statement on her departure. That read: “I would like to thank the senior management team for giving me the opportunity to manage Newcastle United Women’s Football Club over the past six years. The experiences and memories will stay with me for a lifetime.
“A major summer of recruitment, along with significant facility improvements, brought many transitions to navigate. We put in considerable effort to build on last season’s excellent fifth-place finish, but early results this season did not reflect the quality of our performances. It will take time for the players and staff to fully bond and settle within this new team environment, and I am confident that results will improve as the season goes on.

“My thanks go out to the dedicated and talented staff and players within the squad, especially the senior players who have been invaluable allies. Amanda Staveley, Su Cumming and the new ownership group have played a key role in advancing the women’s teams, and I will always be grateful for their contribution to the growth of the game in the North East.
“My connection with the fans fills me with pride, and sharing this journey has been a true privilege. I am honoured to have played a part in the team’s development and history. This football club will always hold a special place in my heart.
“I wish the club nothing but continued success in the years ahead. Becky.”
Whilst Newcastle United Women now need to prepare for a clash against Durham this weekend, they will undoubtedly have one eye on the Tyne-Wear derby clash against Sunderland in less than a fortnight’s time. The Magpies completed a league double over the Black Cats last season with the second of those wins coming at St James’ Park back in March in-front of a record-breaking 38,502 crowd.
A 4-1 triumph over Ipswich Town at the weekend halted a slide in results and ensured that Newcastle United, in stark contrast to the men’s side, would end the weekend above local rivals Sunderland in the WSL2 table. Newcastle now sit just four points behind second-placed Birmingham City but eight adrift of leaders Charlton Athletic.
