Liverpool secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in a marquee UEFA Champions League clash at Anfield, handing the Spanish giants their first group-stage defeat. Alexis Mac Allister scored the decisive goal, adding to the discomfort for former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in his return to the club.
Both sides pressed high from the outset, with Liverpool dominating much of the early exchanges. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was kept busy, making several key saves to keep the score level at halftime against Liverpool's persistent attacks, particularly from Dominik Szoboszlai.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute when Mac Allister powered in Szoboszlai's free-kick, sending the home crowd into celebration. Courtois was left helpless at the near post as Liverpool took the lead.
Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid in the offseason, was introduced by coach Xabi Alonso nine minutes from full time and was met with relentless boos from the Anfield crowd.
Liverpool nearly doubled their lead in the 87th minute, but Courtois produced another brilliant save to deny Cody Gakpo. The 1-0 win lifted Liverpool to sixth place in the group with nine points after four matches, just below Real Madrid, who were level on points but led on goal difference.
