Report: Wolves make approach for title-winning Portuguese manager as Pereira replacement

Wolves have made an approach for Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira as they continue their search for Vitor Pereira’s replacement, according to ESPN Brazil.

The Molineux side have reportedly seen their offer rejected by the Portuguese manager, who remains focused on his season in Brazil and is not looking to depart Palmeiras at the moment.

Ferreira, a former Braga and PAOK manager, is now in his fifth season at the Brazilian side, whom he led to two league titles in 2022 and 2023 and claimed the Copa Libertadores twice, in 2020 and 2021.

Ferreira is also believed to have rejected an approach from Nottingham Forest earlier this season, when the City Ground side were looking for a replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo.

The 46-year-old is said to be receiving an ‘elite’ salary at Palmeiras that makes it difficult for even the world’s top clubs to lure him away from Brazil.

Wolves parted ways with Pereira following Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Fulham, with the club failing to win any of their first 10 Premier League games this season, sitting rock bottom of the table.

The Molineux side have secured just two wins in 13 games in all competitions under the Portuguese manager this term, both coming in the Carabao Cup, where they were knocked out in the last 16 by Chelsea last Wednesday.

Pereira took charge of Wolves in December last year, replacing Gary O’Neil, and guided the West Midlands club to 16th in his first season.

Wolves rewarded the 57-year-old with a new three-year contract in September, following a difficult summer for the club, during which key players Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha departed to Manchester City and Manchester United respectively.

As GIVEMESPORT previously reported, there were provisions allowing Wolves to sack Pereira without paying out the full three years of his new deal. Instead, he will be paid only for this season.

Wolves were advancing in talks to bring back O’Neil to the club before he decided to withdraw from the running for the Molineux vacancy on Monday.

The West Midlands club are reported to be still considering several candidates, including former Man United boss Erik ten Hag and Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards.
