Refusal to spend €10-12m has benefitted Sunderland – Club dropped a transfer chance

Granit Xhaka has been a pivotal success in Sunderland’s start to the season.

The Swiss international has played ten times, scoring once and assisting on three occasions. He’s become a pillar in midfield, with his leadership also proving key for the Black Cats.

There is now regret in Italy about missing out on the 33-year-old Sunderland star.

MilanLive provide background about why a transfer to AC Milan failed for Xhaka.

Rossoneri sporting director Igli Tare was keen on bringing the player to the San Siro in the summer. A move didn’t go through because Milan weren’t willing to spend over €10-12m.

This is because of Xhaka’s age and due to his insistence to depart Bayer Leverkusen.

The midfielder had already agreed personal terms with Milan, but talks between the German side and Italian giants never took off.

This gave Sunderland the opportunity to sign the player for €20m. This amount was also more favourable to Bayer Leverkusen.

There’s regret Milan couldn’t sign Xhaka.

A reluctance to spend even a relatively modest fee has cost the Rossoneri and been of benefit to Sunderland.
