Chelsea are planning a move to sign long-term target Mike Maignan in January.
With the need to upgrade their goalkeeping position a clear priority, the 30-year old French international has been long top of the Stamford Bridge wish list.
He is out of contract with his current club AC Milan at the end of the season, and it had been though they were prepared to wait until that happened before attempting to sign him on a free transfer.
His situation means that Chelsea would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with Maignan in January, but they do not want to waste time, nor run the risk that he agrees to join somebody else, or listens to the overtures from Milan about a new deal at the club.
Valued at around ₤22 million, Maignan could be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea and help their bid to win silverware in the second half of the season.
