Porter plays in England's U17 World Cup opener

Jack Porter played the full 90 minutes as England lost their opening game of the FIFA U17 World Cup to Venezuela.

Our goalkeeper, who represented England at the Euro U17 competition earlier this year, started the contest taking place in Qatar, as the Young Lions lost 3-0.

Two goals in five minutes from Roman Davis and Dioner Fuentes meant the Venezuelans went into the break 2-0 up. Eider Barrios rounded off the scoring to complete the victory over Liam Bramley's side.

Marli Salmon is also in the matchday squad for England. The 15-year-old was an unused sub in the contest in Al Rayyan.

what it means

England, who last won the competition back in 2017, now sit at the bottom of Group E after the opening matches. The other game in their group saw Egypt defeat Haiti 4-1.

The format follows the same structure as next year’s men’s World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico, meaning the top two of each group will qualify for the knockout stages, with eight of the best third-placed teams also joining the 12 group winners and 12 runner-ups.

England's next match is against Haiti on November 7, taking place at 12.30pm UK time.
