Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has been selected for Sweden's forthcoming internationals despite missing the Reds' last two wins. Former Chelsea and West Ham United head coach Graham Potter made the bold decision to include the talisman despite suffering a groin injury during the first half of the 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, last month.
The 26-year-old will join up for the Englishman's first squad in the international hotsteat as they conclude their World Cup qualification campaign. Sweden take on Switzerland before concluding their group stage at home to Slovenia, in what has been a dismal pursuit for the nation as they sit bottom of the table with just one point.
Their 1-0 defeat to Kosovo spelt the end of Jon Dahl Tomasson's time in the post last month. However, Liverpool utilised the international break to help accelerate the bid for Isak's fitness after a heavily impacted pre-season schedule.
However, after back-to-back outings against Manchester United and Frankfurt, Isak was sidelined with a fresh issue.
The blockbuster summer signing broke down after making his first successive starts for Liverpool, forcing him out of their wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid last night, as well as defeats to Brentford and the Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Crystal Palace.
Potter provided a glimpse into Sweden's plans for Isak ahead of their final two qualifiers, which could be a boost for his Liverpool selection possibilities on Sunday and beyond the international break - where the Reds return to face Nottingham Forest.
"As things stand right now, they are available. Alex can hopefully play a bit this weekend and will be in Spain on Monday," he said.
Speaking ahead of the Champions League showdown against Real Madrid, Arne Slot admitted it will be touch-and-go for the £125million-man to feature against Manchester City after remaining absent from team training.
"All three [Jeremie Frimpong, Alisson Becker and Alexander Isak] are unavailable for tomorrow [vs Real Madrid]. Jeremie and Alisson will both be unavailable for Sunday.
"With Alex, we have to wait and see. Definitely not starting on Sunday but maybe involved in the squad.
"He is still not training with the team so we have to wait and see."
Isak hasn't got off to the desired start at Anfield after netting once in all competitions after being eased into competitive action. His difficulties have contrasted with Hugo Ekitike's brilliant start after the summer signing hit the ground running at Anfield.
Liverpool are showing signs of returning to their best after back-to-back triumphs over Aston Villa and Real Madrid. But on Sunday they face a title-race showdown against Pep Guardiola's side looking to bridge the gap to leaders Arsenal.
