Crystal Palace have been charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) after supporters displayed a large banner about Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis ahead of their Premier League clash in August.

Relations between the two clubs had become strained over the summer following their battle for a spot in this season's Europa League. UEFA ultimately decided that Forest would compete in the second-tier European competition instead of Palace, who were ruled out because of previous co-owner John Textor's stake in Lyon.

Whilst Marinakis was absent from the match, which ended 1-1, fans made their views known. Supporters in the Holmesdale End at Selhurst Park unveiled a banner showing Marinakis pointing a gun at Morgan Gibbs-White's head, referencing the midfielder's failed move to Tottenham before he committed his future to Forest with a new deal.

An FA statement confirmed: "Crystal Palace FC has been charged with misconduct in relation to its Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest FC on Sunday 24 August.

"It's alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters or followers) didn't behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, insulting and/or provocative way during the fixture. Crystal Palace FC has until Tuesday 11 November to provide a response."

Palace secured a spot in the Europa League after triumphing over Manchester City to win the FA Cup in May. However, they were later barred from the competition due to former co-owner Textor's controlling interest in Ligue 1 side Lyon.

UEFA only decided that Textor held a controlling interest in two clubs in the Europa League after a prolonged saga, with Marinakis reportedly contacting the governing body to express concerns about Palace's ownership.

Forest were the first to profit from Palace's exclusion as they finished seventh in the Premier League and qualified for the Conference League.

Following Palace's demotion to the third tier of European football, they appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but failed to reverse the decision, settling for a place in the Conference League. Forest, on the other hand, received a last-minute promotion to the Europa League.

The Eagles have had mixed results in their league phase matches in the Conference League, winning one and losing one after defeating Fredrikstad to reach this stage of the competition. They claimed a 2-0 victory against Dynamo Kyiv, before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cypriot side AEK Larnaca at the end of last month.

Forest have managed to secure four points from their first three Europa League matches this season. Their journey saw them draw 2-2 with Real Betis, suffer a 3-2 defeat at home against Danish team Midtjylland, and clinch a crucial 2-0 victory over Porto in Sean Dyche's inaugural match as manager.
