Steer opts to hang his gloves up

Former Luton Town, Aston Villa, Norwich City and Peterborough United goalkeeper Jed Steer has called time on his playing career at the age of just 33.

The shot-stopper began his career at Carrow Road after joining the Canaries academy at the age of nine, turning pro in 2009 and having loan spells at Yeovil Town and Cambridge United, making his senior debut for the Glovers in a 2-0 League Two loss at Brentford in August 2011. Having featured for England at U16s to U19s level, Steer was signed by Aston Villa in the summer of 2013, getting a first start in the 3-0 Capital One Cup triumph over Rotherham United.

He spent the majority of the 2014-15 campaign on loan at Doncaster Rovers and Yeovil, returning to the Midlands to make his Premier League bow in the 1-0 home defeat to Burnley. Steer then headed to Huddersfield Town the following term, making 38 appearances for the Terriers, while back at Villa again he played four times in the 2017-18 season.

Borrowed by Charlton the next term, the keeper found himself recalled by Villa after an injury to Lovre Kalinić as he played the second half of the season for his parent club, producing a starring role in their promotion back to the top flight, saving two penalties in the play-off semi-final win over West Bromwich Albion, then also starting the 2-1 final success over Derby County at Wembley.

Steer had his second top flight outing in November 2019, a 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, with his third in September 2021, a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea as midway through that season, he moved to Luton on loan following an injury to James Shea, making his debut in the 3-0 FA Cup fourth round success at Cambridge United.

He then started three successive Championship wins, with clean sheets against West Bromwich Albion and Derby, but sadly suffered a serious Achilles injury in the early stages of Town’s fifth round tie against Chelsea in March 2022. Released after a decade at Aston Villa in May 2023, Steer was back in the game when heading to Peterborough United on a short term deal in January 2024, playing 22 times, as he penned a new two year deal in June 2024, making 28 appearances and playing twice more at Wembley during his stint with the Posh as Darren Ferguson’s tea, won the EFL Trophy on back-to-back occasions.

However, he opted to leave London Road by mutual consent just under 12 months later, as confirming his decision to retire from the game last week, Steer wrote on his official X page: “It’s time to hang up the gloves. It’s been a blast Three Wembley final wins, promotion to the Premier League and both Achilles ruptured! Thank you to the fans and everyone who’s been part of the journey! I have memories that will live with me forever. Thank you.”
