Cowboys Cut Ties With Running Back After Blockbuster Trade Deadline Day

The Dallas Cowboys had a busy trade deadline day, acquiring two defensive superstars in defensive lineman Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets and linebacker Logan Wilson from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Despite being just 3-5-1 and coming off a Monday Night Football stinker, the Cowboys decided to go all in and revamp the defense heading into their Week 10 bye.

After their two blockbuster trades on Tuesday, Dallas waived running back Malik Davis. The third-year running back was in the midst of a quiet season, getting just three rushes for six yards across three games.

Davis, 26, initially signed with Dallas an an undrafted free agent in 2022. The University of Florida product made a decent impact his rookie season, appearing in 12 games and rushing 38 times for 161 yards and a touchdown. He added six receptions for 63 yards and also played 176 snaps on special teams.

In 2023, Davis saw his playing time dramatically decline. He appeared in just three games on special teams and didn’t get a single snap on offense. In 2024, he didn’t appear in any games with the Cowboys.

This year, Davis was mainly used on special teams with just 10 offensive snaps. Now, he’s heading to waivers, where he’ll have a chance to be claimed by another team. If he clears waivers, it’s possible he rejoins Dallas on the practice squad.

The Cowboys running back room has been dominated this season by Javonte Williams, a former second-round pick by the Denver Broncos who’s finally enjoying a breakout season.

Williams has already shattered his career-high of rushing touchdowns in a season with eight, and his nine total touchdowns are two more than his previous career-best which he set his rookie year. Williams has 139 rushes for 716 yards this season. His personal-best in a whole season is 903 rushing yards.

The Cowboys have mainly leaned on Williams this season, with Davis nor Jaydon Blue getting many touches. Blue, a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, has appeared in four games, rushing 22 times for 65 yards.
