Liam Cooper is on the lookout for a new club after leaving CSKA Sofia

Former Leeds United captain and fans' favourite Liam Cooper could be heading back to the Championship in the coming weeks.

Cooper has been without a club since departing Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia in the summer. There was plenty of speculation linking him with a host of clubs throughout pre-season, but no deal materialised and he has remained unattached and looking for an opportunity to get back into football.

That opportunity could come at Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls have endured a torrid time and are now in administration, which has brought with it an embargo from signing any players.

Wednesday were already prevented from making permanent deals over the summer due to a series of restrictions imposed on them by the EFL, however they are holding talks in the hope some restrictions can be lifted now a movement to secure a new owner has started.

That would mean being allowed to sign free agents. According to the Sheffield Star one such free agent wanted by the Owls is ex-Leeds captain Cooper.

Speaking about talks with the EFK, joint-administrator Kris Wigfield told BBC Sheffield: “There’s a possibility. We are looking to give the manager as much help as we possibly can. We’ve had conversations with the EFL and there are some hurdles to get through with FIFA and with the EFL.

“We’re hopeful we can do that and if we could just bring in one or two free agents to help the manager and make the club a little bit more competitive, particularly when we get injuries or he needs to make substitutions, then that would be fantastic.

“No promises at this stage, but we’re hopeful we can get one or two more players in for after the international break.”
