Hibs' Momentum Cut Short: What Went Wrong Against Rangers & Livingston?

The star is a hero at Hibs and has achieved similar status with Aston Villa.

A Hibs hero has signed a new deal with Aston Villa that will run until the summer of 2028.

John McGinn joined the side currently managed by Unai Emery in 2018 after an illustrious spell at Easter Road, where he won the Scottish Cup and Championship across his 136 appearances. He is now captain of Aston Villa, witnessing first-hand their rise from the English second tier to the Champions League in recent years.

The 31-year-old is a game short of 300 games for the Birmingham-based side across all competitions, netting 33 goals and notching 41 assists. He has also made himself a Scotland hero in that time and turned into a talisman for Steve Clarke’s sides that have gone to Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

Why John McGinn has signed new Aston Villa contract

McGinn was named Aston Villa captain in 2022, featuring in 14 games so far for his club this season. An Aston Villa statement reads: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce that Club Captain, John McGinn, has signed a new contract with the club.

“The midfielder has agreed a deal that will keep him at Villa until 2028. McGinn has been a stalwart in the Villa line-up since joining from Hibernian in 2018 and has been an integral part of the club's journey from the Championship to the Champions League. With over 80 caps for Scotland to his name, he also sits fifth on his country's list of all-time goalscorers.”

Boss Unai Emery has provided his take on the major commitment that McGinn has put into Aston Villa. He said: “Three years we are together, and in those three years he showed us and he showed me how he is leading the team in all the moments. The most important thing is how he is responding on the field.

“On the field, he has responded very well. He is a very versatile player, helping us as a midfielder, as a winger, as a number ten. His commitment with Aston Villa is a huge commitment, before I arrived here and the three years we are doing together. He showed me it. What is John McGinn expecting from himself and Aston Villa in the next few years? He’s going to be an important player for us and for the supporters.”

McGinn said on his journey at Aston Villa last year as they embarked upon their Champions League campaign: “It's mad. When you're in it - travelling, playing, focus on the next game - you don't take a step back and reflect. But it's amazing. Myself, Tyrone Mings, Jacob Ramsey, we have all been on this journey, amongst a lot of the staff, all these people who've been with the club when it maybe wasn't so good.

“I've been fortunate to be on a crazy journey and hopefully it can continue and we can create even better memories, more special nights, more success. But we know the formula for that's hard work, that's what's got us here so far. When you're in the midst of it you don't really reflect, you just get on with it and enjoy it."
