Man City Could Make Move For Tino Livramento Alternative Who Hugo Viana Has Signed Once Before

Man City are keeping close tabs on Sporting Lisbon right-back Ivan Fresneda, according to reports.

Current Director of Football Hugo Viana recruited the Spaniard from Real Valladolid in the summer of 2023 when he performed a similar role at Sporting.

At the time, Chelsea and Arsenal were mentioned among Fresneda’s potential suitors, but he ended up moving to Portugal for a fee that could rise to €12m (£10.3m)

Chelsea were believed to be close to securing the defender’s signature but it was subsequently reported that issues related to PSR stopped them from going ahead with the deal.

There are suggestions, though, that the Blues have a first option on Fresneda, which means they will be informed if City or any other team make a bid for the player.

Why are Man City targeting the fullback?

TBRFootball are claiming that Viana sees Fresneda as a cheaper alternative to Newcastle’s Tino Livramento.

The Cityzens were hopeful of signing the England international during the summer transfer window but the Magpies priced them out of a move.

However, there is still a need to strengthen the right-hand side of defence, with manager Pep Guardiola currently relying on Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis.

What do fans need to know about Fresneda?

The 21-year-old actually started out at Real Madrid’s academy before having spells at Leganes and Real Valladolid. He made his first-team debut for the latter against Real Betis in the Copa Del Rey at the start of 2022.

Fresneda went on to play 26 times for the Spanish club over the next eighteeen months before he was sold to Sporting at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

The defender is now in his third season with the Liga Portugal champions, but he only really established himself as a starter at the beginning of this year.
