Horse Tracks: The Broncos pass on making a splash trade at the deadline

The Broncos stood pat at the trade deadline. While Broncos Country was hyped up for a big WR signing, we got a whole big back of nothingburgers.

Let’s be real, though: The Broncos certainly did their homework and looked for upgrades. What the coaches and GMs may say in a press conference isn’t necessarily the honest truth in my experience. Here’s what Payton had to say when asked about the media reports of a possible trade for a receiver:

> “I saw a lot of that. We’ve invested in and like this group and where we are going.”

Nothing in that statement speaks to whether or not they tried to make something happen.

But the truth is probably that they were willing to part with some mid-round draft picks, and the teams with talent to trade wanted 1sts and 2nds.

Yes, a splash signing like Jaylen Waddle would have been a home run move even if it cost some big picks. But Payton knows this WR group is young and developing. Outside of Courtland Sutton, none of them are even close to their ceilings.

Also, our front office has been killing it in the drafts recently. I think that raises the value of those draft picks in the eyes of the front office when it comes to trading them away for players.

While the fan in me would have loved to see a big trade from the Broncos, the Broncos are in the running for a postseason run, after all.

I think the present looks good. I think the future looks bright. The Broncos’ wide receivers are going to be just fine this season. Next offseason the team can worry about adding talent. Right now they have work to do.
