Matty Cash has revealed he’s had chats with Unai Emery about controlling his emotions, something which he credits as a reason for his consistency this season.
The right-back is arguably in the form of his life, and many Villa fans believe he’s their player of the season so far.
His form was rewarded last month with a new contract, which is valid until 2029, with the option of a further 12 months.
After signing the contract, Emery spoke about the Poland international needing to control his emotions better, while Cash himself admitted that he now handles criticism better too.
“Over the last few years, it’s something I’ve been working on and I’ve had chats with the manager about controlling emotions," Cash admitted. "In big games, you have to do that. You have to be really strong-minded and mentally really good.
“We’re all humans, and we all have feelings. Sometimes you read criticism, and our job is to focus on what happens on the pitch. We have to be demanding every day to get that up.
“Everyone has opinions. Whatever the opinion is, you have to take it on the chin. I’m obviously delighted to play well, but you can’t be too comfortable.
“I want to achieve goals with the club and to try and do the best I can. We’re all humans, and we all have feelings."
Asked about his new deal, Cash said: “It’s been one of my goals to try and be consistent with performances over the past few years, and since I’ve been a footballer.
“I feel like home here. I wouldn’t say I feel comfortable because you can never feel too comfortable. You always have to have goals and objectives that you want to achieve.
“I’m delighted to be on the path that we are on, and hopefully, we can continue to be really successful.”
