Key midfielder is back for Palace as they close in on Albion showdown

Adam Wharton is back in the matchday squad ahead of [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au)’s trip to Crystal Palace.

But his boss is keeping a careful eye on him after illness.

Chadi Riad wll also be in the group to face AZ Alkmaar in UEFA Conference League action on Thursday.

But it looks unlikely the Morocco international centre-back will feature either in that game or when the Seagulls visit Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Sunday.

England midfielder Wharton missed impressive wins over Liverpool and Brentford in the last week through illness.

Speaking on the eve of the Alkmaar game, Palace boss Oliver Glasner said: “To be honest, I think he’s not 100% right now.

“His fever was too high and he was lying in his bed – but it’s good now to be back in the rhythm, in the training sessions, and then let’s see how many minutes he gets tomorrow.”

That could suggests Wharton is being readied for the Albion contest.

Riad has recovered from a serious knee injury and Glasner said: “Now it’s to build him up step by step.

“He needs now training rhythm and playing a few minutes with the under-21s to get back into the game rhythm. No pressure on him – no rush.”

Former Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah - who was sent off in the fixture last season - is currently sidelined by a muscle strain and is not exected to be available on Sunday.
