Phil Thompson shares the exact moment he knew Alexis Mac Allister was back to his best at Liverpool

Alexis Mac Allister seems to have turned his poor start to the season around.

The Reds did not have a very good start to their title defence at all as after five wins on the bounce, albeit rather lucky ones, they went on a run of four league defeats in a row.

Many of their players just looked nowhere near the levels they once were, with Mac Allister one of those who struggled.

Injuries disrupted pre-season and then he just looked off the pace, although recent performances have shown that he is getting back to his best.

Ex-Red Phil Thompson believes there was one moment that proved he was back to the Mac Allister all the fans loved, and even though it was a bizarre moment, it is hard not to agree.

Alexis Mac Allister showed fight against Aston Villa

Liverpool have now won back-to-back games for the first time since September, with the first being in the league against Aston Villa.

This seemed like a bit of a turning point as the performance was much better than in previous weeks, with many players looking back to their best.

One of these was Mac Allister, and even though he had a good game, Thompson believes the moment that proved it to him was when he was tussling with Amadou Onana in the penalty area.

“He’s got his mojo back, on Saturday, in that game, did you see him tussling with Onana?” he said on The Official Liverpool FC Podcast.

“It wasn’t a lot, but he was passionate, they were grappling and I thought that passion, that drive, that commitment hasn’t been there, but these last two games he’s been back, Ryan has been back, Dominik was there again setting standards.”

He followed this up with an excellent performance against Real Madrid, with his goal sealing the win for the Reds and boosting their chances of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.

Arne Slot now knows his best midfield

At the start of this season, there has been a lot of confusion over who to start in midfield, with the addition of Florian Wirtz making this choice a lot harder.

However, it is clear after the last two games that the best trio in the middle of the park is the one Arne Slot went for last year, this being Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mac Allister.

They balance each other out nicely and all work incredibly hard, hence why they have made it so difficult for both Villa and Madrid.

Wirtz has also shown he is better playing on the wing, while someone like Curtis Jones is a very good option off the bench, meaning that this headache may now have been cured.
