PITTSBURGH --Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey is officially making the switch from cornerback to safety for another, head coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday.
Ramsey, who played every snap against the Indianapolis Colts at safety, will continue to play there with injuries and struggles in that room. Kyle Dugger stepped up to play all but one snap after the New England Patriots traded him to the Steelers, and Chuck Clark as well as Jabrill Peppers have dealt with availability concerns.
“Jalen will continue to work exclusively at safety,” Tomlin said. “We value his play, his positional flexibility. It’s an asset to us. It gives a lot of people things to work on, but certainly under the circumstances that we’re under right now, we deemed that appropriate as we did last week in terms of nailing him down there.”
Pittsburgh knew when they traded for him this offseason that he could stick at safety. He has also played a lot of snaps at slot cornerback and outside cornerback, and it seems likely that as the weeks go along, Ramsey will continue to move around.
“It’s just his relationship with the game,” Tomlin said about Ramsey’s skillset at safety.. “He’s got really good instincts; he’s got really good passion for the game. He studies the game, and I think those are some things that really enable him to play back there, and that’s such a major component of that position.”
Ramsey handled Colts tight end Tyler Warren for much of the team’s 27-20 win over the Colts on Sunday, and their simplistic defensive style helped the entire group play fast and sure of themselves.
