Newcastle United are now looking at Flamengo defender Léo Ortiz, according to reports in Brazil. Outlets in the player’s home country claim the Premier League club, owned by Mohammed bin Salman, plan a major offer for the 28-year-old in January.
Ortiz has been a key figure under Filipe Luís and is widely seen as one of the best defenders in Brazil. His calm build-up play and quality on the ball often stand out. Even Flamengo legend Zico praised him, saying Ortiz plays like a No.10 from the back.
Flamengo’s defence has been transformed since his arrival. In 2025, they conceded less than half the goals they did last season. Ortiz’s reading of the game and leadership have made him an automatic starter and a fan favourite.

RB Leipzig offered around €17m last summer, but both Flamengo and the player rejected the move. Nottingham Forest have also tracked him, keeping tabs on his form throughout the year. Now Newcastle United have joined the race and are ready to make their move.
Flamengo intend to fight to keep him. Ortiz has a deal until December 2028 and a high release clause. The club see him as central to their long-term plans.
Still, with Newcastle’s financial power and growing interest from England, holding him may become a challenge in the next window.
