The San Francisco 49ers defeated the New York Giants in Week 9, extending a stretch of success that has come without their starting quarterback.
Brock Purdy remains sidelined with a toe injury, leaving Mac Jones to handle the offense.
The veteran backup has helped the 49ers win five of seven games during that span, showing steady control and execution throughout.
Jones has performed well enough to raise questions about a possible quarterback controversy in San Francisco.
Analyst Chris Broussard recently addressed that issue and made his position clear on the 49ers’ decision regarding Jones.
“Stick with him until Brock gets back,” Broussard said. “This is what you want from a backup. I mean, Mac has played well, he has not played well enough to displace a quarterback who led you to the Super Bowl. A quarterback who left the field against the (Kansas City Chiefs) with the lead in that Super Bowl. A quarterback who has led game-winning drives, in the playoffs, against really good teams.”

Jones has respectable numbers in his seven starts, throwing for 1,832 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 67.2 percent of his passes.
Those statistics reflect competent play that has kept the offense functional but not necessarily elevated to championship-level performance.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan recently reinforced the team’s long-term stance on the quarterback position.
He acknowledged that Purdy’s injury may not fully heal this season but dismissed any notion of a controversy.
San Francisco made its commitment to Purdy clear this offseason by signing him to a five-year, $265 million extension.
That investment reflects the organization’s belief in Purdy as their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.
