School take surprise decision over pupil safety as Aston Villa vs Maccabi Tel Aviv protest…

A school in Aston has confirmed it will close early on Thursday amid planned protests linked to the Aston Villa vs Maccabi Tel Aviv fixture, though West Midlands Police stress the decision is not based on any police recommendation.

The school, E-ACT Mansfield Green Academy, told GMS that pupils will be sent home earlier than usual tomorrow “as a precaution” due to expected disruption in the area surrounding Villa Park.

The decision was made following discussions within the school community and after assessing the potential impact of traffic congestion and local demonstrations.

A spokesperson for E-ACT Mansfield Green Academy said: “Following advice from the local authority regarding possible congestion and local disruption, E-ACT Mansfield Green Academy will close 1 hour 15 minutes early on Thursday, 6 November. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all pupils. Other schools in the area are taking similar precautions, and we thank parents and carers for their understanding.”

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police also clarified to GMS: “This would be a decision for the schools and local authority, and is not based on any police recommendation.”

The confirmation follows speculation circulating on social media that schools across Aston were being “ordered” to close early. Police have dismissed that claim, saying any closures are at the discretion of individual schools or Birmingham City Council.

The match between Aston Villa and Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv is set to attract thousands of fans and heightened security, with demonstrations expected nearby. Police are preparing an increased presence around the stadium and along major routes through Aston and Witton to ensure public safety.

While only Mansfield Green has so far confirmed an early closure, other local schools are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. Parents are being advised to check directly with their children’s schools for the latest updates regarding operating hours and collection times.

Community leaders have urged residents to remain calm and to follow official advice rather than unverified online claims. Police are expected to have a visible presence throughout matchday, with efforts focused on keeping both sets of supporters safe and ensuring the fixture goes ahead without disruption.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the buildup, the focus will ultimately turn to football, as Unai Emery’s Aston Villa look to strengthen their push for European success under the lights at Villa Park.
