Hugo Ekitike sets unique Liverpool history

Hugo Ekitike featured for Liverpool as they secured a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League, courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister’s decisive header on Tuesday night.

Thibaut Courtois was Madrid’s standout performer, producing a string of fine saves in the first half to deny Dominik Szoboszlai, before later tipping over headers from Virgil van Dijk and Ekitike after the break.

Florian Wirtz, back in the starting lineup, created the best of those opportunities.

Madrid also escaped a contentious penalty decision in the opening 45 minutes, but Liverpool’s persistence paid off when Mac Allister headed home Szoboszlai’s pinpoint cross from close range.

Xabi Alonso’s side never truly looked capable of forcing an equaliser.

The result lifts Liverpool into the top eight of the Champions League standings, level on points with Madrid, whose perfect start to the competition came to an end.

Meanwhile, a remarkable statistic has emerged regarding Ekitike’s goalscoring record.

The summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt has now scored six times for Liverpool, with each of those goals coming on a different day of the week.

His first strike came on a Sunday in the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace, followed by Premier League goals on a Friday versus Bournemouth and on a Monday against Newcastle United.

He then scored on a Saturday in the Merseyside derby, on a Tuesday against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, and finally on a Wednesday against former club Eintracht Frankfurt last month.

According to club statistician Ged Rea, Ekitike is the first player in Liverpool’s history to score each of his first six goals on different days of the week, a quirky but impressive milestone in his early Anfield career.
