However, just three minutes into the match, he went down holding his leg and quickly made his way off the pitch.

Lavia appeared upset with the setback and threw a bottle in anger as he headed for treatment.

Moises Caicedo was brought on to replace the Belgian, who could be set for another spell on the sidelines.

Chelsea took the lead on 16 minutes when Estevao Willian fired in a low effort at Qarabag goalkeeper Mateusz Kochalski's near post.

However, Qarabag equalised through Leandro Andrade and then took the lead thanks to a Marko Jankovic penalty on 39 minutes.

Lavia injury struggles at Chelsea

After shining at Southampton, Lavia completed a £58million move to Chelsea in 2023 but had a slow start at Stamford Bridge.

He made just one appearance during his debut season as he dealt with ankle and hamstring injuries.

Lavia featured in 22 matches in the 2024/25 campaign, but faced more hamstring issues and played just over a thousand minutes.

The 21-year-old was also left out of their Conference League winning squad due to load management.

Now in his third season at Chelsea, Lavia has made seven appearances in all competitions.

He missed their first five Premier League fixtures with a muscle issue.

Lavia started for Chelsea in their 5-1 thrashing of Ajax and played 66 minutes in the Champions League clash.

However, it remains to be seen when he will return to action for the Blues, who have lost another midfield option due to injury.

Dario Essugo underwent surgery on his thigh and is continuing his recovery.

Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Santos are their only fit midfielders as of now.

However, full-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto can also play in midfield for Chelsea if needed.
