Latest Archie Gray data should truly shock Leeds United fans (opinion)

Leeds fans waved goodbye to Archie Gray back in July 2024 after Tottenham sealed a £40m deal.

It was labelled a £30m deal by many outlets, but many consider it a £40m switch as Joe Rodon moved the other way to Yorkshire in a £10m transfer.

Regardless of the exact fee, it is a move which is yet to work out for the Leeds academy graduate.

The grandchild of Eddie Gray has only played 72 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, and despite making 19 starts under Ange Postecoglou last term, most of those came at centre-back due to a severe injury crisis.

Now, the CIES Football Observatory have released a new valuation on Gray which should stun Leeds fans.

CIES only value Archie Gray at £48m

Despite spending the past 16 months at Tottenham, the 19-year-old is only being valued at £8m more than his £40m fee.

That will come as a surprise to most Leeds fans given how precocious a talent Gray is, one who many expected to quickly develop into at least a £60m talent with the right amount of playing time at Spurs.

Football scout Ben Mattinson even wrote on X (previously known as Twitter) back in February 2024 to opine that Gray – who recently applauded Leeds fans – was on his way to becoming a £100m player, let alone a £60m player.

The championship has many top talents but it’s hard to look past Archie Gray when discussing who’s the best

Haven’t seen this much composure and versatility at his age in this league. Majority of the season he’s played out of position at RB and been outstanding

Of course, the Tottenham No.14 still has plenty of time on his side to fulfil his vast potential, but an immense talent like him really ought to be worth more than £48m in the current climate of modern day football.

The difficult situation involving Harry Gray as Archie Gray warms the bench at Tottenham

Leeds have another diamond off the Gray production line in Harry Gray, although as talented as the 17-year-old striker is, he might end up being a victim of Premier League football.

While Archie managed to make almost 50 senior appearances for Leeds before his 18th birthday, Harry currently has just one ahead of his 18th birthday next October, through no fault of his own we must add.

That was largely due to the fact Leeds were in the Championship and could afford to use academy players more often – given the lesser quality in the division – whereas the Premier League is a different animal and opportunities cannot be afforded as easily.

Therefore, if Leeds survive this season, a loan move should arguably be arranged for the younger brother of Archie.
