Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs is set to return to his former club NEC Nijmegen. That’s so he can say goodbye to the Dutch club.
Forza NEC cover the situation today after the club made fans aware in a post on X today. They reported that Roefs would be in attendance for their game on Sunday. The plan is for him to say goodbye during halftime of the clash with FC Groningen.
Roefs ‘will bid farewell’ to his old club properly after leaving them for Sunderland in the summer. He joined the Black Cats in a €10m deal, a club record.
The goalkeeper had progressed through the Dutch club’s youth ranks, joining them in 2014 from his local club VV Heeswijk.
He made his professional debut in 2023 before a standout season last year established him as first choice ahead of Jasper Cillessen. He then went on to make 42 senior appearances for the club, 37 in the Eredivisie.
He’s now a key man at Sunderland but is planning a flying visit to say goodbye. He’ll play against Arsenal on Saturday before returning briefly to De Goffert on Sunday. After that, he’s linking up with the Netherlands squad for the next international break.
