Werder Bremen are not currently looking to re-sign Niclas Füllkrug, despite him looking to leave West Ham United.
That’s [according to BILD](https://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/werder-bremen-warum-eine-rueckkehr-von-niclas-fuellkrug-noch-kein-thema-ist-690b3e90154e6f61444c654c), who say the German club would need a ‘loophole’ to sign their former star.
The newspaper explains that while Füllkrug is a fan favourite and promotion hero, they are not currently thinking of him for January. That’s despite his agent opening the door to an exit from West Ham this week.
While there is an acceptance that it would be a ‘win-win situation’ to re-sign Füllkrug, it’s unlikely to happen. According to BILD, there are now plans to move for him. And the reasons are numerous.
First of all, his salary at West Ham is €4.5m net a year. That’s completely out of reach for Werder Bremen. Buy him is almost impossible, particularly as there are no signs West Ham will offer a discount. He could only be signed on loan, but West Ham would need to contribute to the fees and his salary.
They’d also need to make space in the squad. That currently has six loanees in it and they can’t sign anymore. There is a ‘loophole’ on that front. FIFA allows more loan signings if another is cancelled first. The obvious solution would cancelling Victor Boniface’s loan deal to get Füllkrug instead.
That’s just a theory, though. And for now, Füllkrug won’t be returning to his former club, unless there’s a major opportunity presented by West Ham.
