The Los Angeles Chargers are getting some offensive line help after they traded for New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Trevor Penning on Tuesday. Penning, who was the Saints’ starting left guard, could start for the Chargers at left tackle.
Penning has played at left tackle, right tackle, and left guard over his career, so the Chargers can slot him in as they see fit on their offensive line.
The move comes after starting left tackle Joe Alt suffered a high ankle sprain that will force him to miss the rest of the season. Alt had missed three previous games with a high ankle sprain before reinsuring it.
His other standout star tackle, Rashawn Slater, went down during the team’s training camp practice after engaging with a player on a block and immediately grabbed his knee. It was reported afterwards that he had suffered a torn patellar tendon that would require season-ending surgery.
It is a tough blow to a Chargers team right in the thick of the AFC playoff race, and their game against the Steelers should have major implications on just what will transpire with seeding. The Steelers own tiebreakers over the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts already, and a win over the Chargers would notch them another huge feather in that bucket.
