Sean Payton says Broncos inactivity at trade deadline is ‘all good’

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is usually a man of many words.

That wasn’t the case on Tuesday afternoon when it came to the first three questions of his press conference.

The NFL trade deadline came and went at 2:00 p.m. MT and the Broncos didn’t make any deals. Payton was asked about Denver’s inactivity and was brief in a handful of responses.

“Yeah, (GM) George (Paton) and I each day talked about different things. And that’s just how it turned out,” Payton said.

Sean Payton was then asked if any moves were close for the Broncos, after all they’re 7-2 and are tied for the most wins in the league.

“No. I think we discussed a few things, but all good,” Payton said.

One of those “few things” might have been Dolphins star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. A report surfaced that the Broncos checked in on the Miami pass-catcher, but the asking price was too high.

Sean Payton was pressed on specifically if he likes the current receivers that Denver has on it roster.

“Yeah, I saw a lot of that. We’ve invested in, we like this group and where we’re going,” Payton said.

The Broncos have drafted Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant in recent years, as well as giving No. 1 wideout Courtland Sutton a huge contract extension over the summer. Clearly, Payton and Paton feel like they’re strong enough weapons for QB Bo Nix along with tight end Evan Engram.

It’s not rare for an NFL head coach to stay fairly quiet after his team doesn’t make any trades.

But clearly, Sean Payton was ready to talk about other things, not any deals that the Broncos didn’t pull the trigger on.
