Anthony Gordon goes down with a hip injury during the game between Newcastle United and Athletic Club
Anthony Gordon has handed Newcastle an injury worry
Newcastle United have been dealt a huge injury blow after was forced off against Athletic Club in the Champions League clash at St. James' Park.
The England international had endured a tricky first half, struggling to find a black and white shirt with his passes while blazing an effort over the bar before going down and receiving treatment.
winger was seen clutching his hip throughout the first-half before being withdrawn by Eddie Howe in the 41st minute and replaced by Jacob Murphy.
Gordon had struggled with problems in his hip during Newcastle's 3-1 defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium at the weekend and was also substituted in that game at half-time.
In his post-match press conference after the Hammers defeat, Howe said: "Anthony was feeling his hip slightly. There were some tactical changes there as well to try and get a different feeling on the pitch."
The 24-year-old had been a doubt for the game, and was clearly struggling with the same injury problem before leaving the field prior to the half-time interval.
Newcastle had a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to a brilliant header from Dan Burn, curling in a fantastic effort following a Kieran Trippier free-kick after just 11 minutes.
The Magpies had a number of oportunities to extend their lead with Joelinton squandering a golden opportunity, while Nick Woltemade also threatened for the hosts.
However, Athletic Club responded strongly and threatened on several occasions. Left-back Adama Boiro had their best chance of the first half.
He cannoned an effort off the woodwork from just outside of the Newcastle box, with Nick Pope relieved to see the shot stay out of his net.
Newcastle would grab a second, though, with Joelinton heading home unmarked four minutes after half-time.
