Chelsea battled to a 2-2 draw with a resilient Azerbaijan outfit, Qarabag, in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.
After a successful London derby at Tottenham, Enzo Maresca made seven changes to the side that won at the weekend.
Chelsea were dealt an early blow six minutes into the game when Romeo Lavia came off with a muscle injury and was replaced by Moises Caicedo, with the Ecuadorian blasting over a shot with his first touch.
Minutes later, João Pedro played Tyrique George in, and the teenager cut back for Andrey Santos, but the Brazilian fired just wide.
Estevao gave Chelsea the lead in the 15th minute after he was found by his fellow Brazilian Santos at the edge of the box. The 18-year-old dribbled past his marker and drilled a low shot into the near post beyond the keeper.
The hosts responded with a neat counterattackminutes later, led by Matheus Silva, which was well dealt with by Marc Cucurella, who cleared away the danger.
Leandro Andrade levelled for the Azerbaijan outfit at the hour mark after Camilo Duran dispossessed Jorrel Hato and wriggled his way into the box, but his effort rebounded off the post for Andrade to volley home the equaliser.
Elvin Zafarquliev could have doubled the home advantage after his overlapping run was met with a well-paced pass, but his effort went over the crossbar.
Hato lost the ball from the resulting goal kick and handled the ball inside his box, and Qarabag were awarded a penalty. Jankovic sent Sanchez the wrong way to give the host the lead six minutes before the break.
Maresca responded with a triple substitution at the break, with Enzo Fernandez, Liam Delap and Alejandro Garnacho all coming on.
Garnacho had an instant impact in the 52nd minute as Delap found him in space from a counterattack, but his pass was intercepted, and it came into the path of the Argentine international, who unleashed a low shot into the far corner.
Fernandez almost immediately gave the Blues the lead after Delap laid off a pass for him, but his goal-bound effort was parried away by the keeper.
The Argentine found himself in space created by Estevao minutes later, but his shot whistled a fraction over the bar.
Olexiy Kashchuk almost won it for the host at the death after he met Nariman Akhundzade’s low cross from a counter, but his effort went straight into the gloves of Sanchez.
At the other end, Garnacho’s spectacular scissor kick was brilliantly kept out by the legs of Kochalski to preserve a point for the host.
