49ers Practice Decision Spells Good News for QB Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers have been without franchise quarterback Brock Purdy for seven of their first nine games to open up the 2025 NFL season.

Purdy is dealing with a nagging turf toe injury he suffered during the 49ers’ season-opening win over the Seattle Seahawks. He returned to the field in Week 4, but suffered an injury setback during a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Backup quarterback Mac Jones has been solid in Purdy’s absence, leading the 49ers to a 5-2 record as the team’s starting QB. In this past Sunday’s Week 9 win over the New York Giants, the veteran signal caller completed 19 of his 24 pass attempts for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

While Jones is playing well, head coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers have made it very clear that Purdy will be the team’s starting quarterback when he’s healthy enough to play.

On Wednesday, Shanahan said the team plans to get Purdy more first-team reps throughout practice this week - increasing the number of reps compared to his limited participation in Week 9.

“Shanahan said the plan this week is to give Purdy more first-team repetitions than he had last week,” 49ers insider Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported.

Purdy was officially listed as “limited” in Wednesday’s practice.

The 49ers will face off against the Los Angeles Rams in an NFC West matchup on Sunday.

If Purdy is still unable to take the field in Week 10, the 49ers are confident that Jones can continue his solid play at the quarterback position.

“This is Brock’s team and if Brock’s good to go and everything and can play like Brock, there’s no decision to be made,” Shanahan said on Tuesday. “It’s just nice as we go through this with Brock with the uncertainty of the toe, it is cool to have someone playing as good as Mac is.

Sunday’s game will kickoff at 4:25 p.m. ET.
