England dealt injury blow as old issue resurfaces for key forward

Bad news: Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel has been handed a fresh injury worry ahead of the November international break after Anthony Gordon was injured in Newcastle’s Champions League win over Athletic Club.

The winger has been a fixture in Tuchel’s England setup and started in wins over Wales and Latvia during the October international break.

But he may not be available for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.

Gordon came into Wednesday night’s match having scored four goals in three Champions League appearances, but could not get on the scoresheet against Athletic.

He went down off the ball in the 41st minute, and was replaced after receiving treatment on the pitch. Jacob Murphy came on in his stead.

Gordon had been spotted clutching his hip for a few minutes before he was hooked.

He had been forced to leave the England camp early back in March after picking up a hip issue in a 2-0 win over Albania.

Speaking at the time, Tuchel said: “He looks injured. It’s his hip and it does not look good. It’s a bit worrying, yeah.”

As England have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup in the United States by beating Latvia 5-0 in October, Gordon’s absence will not have much short-term sporting impact for the Three Lions.
