FOXBOROUGH – Wherever Drake Maye goes, Patriots fans go crazy.
As the second-year quarterback continues to elevate his game, the community has shown its support. Patriots fans have showered Maye with praise at various local appearances. That was seen twice this week as Maye sat courtside at the Celtics game on Monday and then gave a speech to students at Bryant University on Tuesday.
In each case, fans went crazy for their quarterback.
At the Celtics game, Maye was sitting with his wife, Ann Michael, and teammate Will Campbell when they were shown on the TD Garden jumbotron. Soon after, cameras pointed to a boy wearing a shirt that said, “I love Drake Maye.”
On Tuesday, when Maye was introduced at Bryant, the auditorium erupted with “MVP!” chants.
“I think they’re excited about what we’re doing. We’re trying to give them something to cheer for, and we got to bring it every week, but it’s pretty cool,” Maye said on Wednesday. “Pretty cool to see some of the reactions you get, and it’s a reminder of the platform that I’m given and what you can do with it – spread love and spread messages. It’s really cool, and I appreciate the way this city has embraced me. We’ve got to keep going.”
In his second NFL season, Maye has quickly become a top quarterback. He enters this week ranked first in completion percentage (74.1), second in passer rating (116.9), tied for third in passing touchdowns (17), and fifth in passing yards (2,285).
As his game has ascended, so have the 7-2 Patriots.
Although Maye, the No. 3 overall pick, was popular last year, his presence around New England this fall has been different. Last month, Maye was swarmed by Patriots fans when he went to a local high school game to watch Catholic Memorial take on Xaverian.
On Monday, Maye was joined by Campbell, the Patriots first-round pick, at the Celtics game. The rookie tackle said it was the first NBA game he’s ever attended.
When asked about fans going crazy, Campbell looked across the locker room at Maye.
“They were yelling for him,” Campbell said before laughing. “No, it was cool. I had a good time. It’s cool to go out and see the other teams in the city play. A lot of great players throughout these franchises throughout the city, so to be able to go out there and watch them in person is really cool.”
