Cardinals change their mind on quarterback

The Arizona Cardinals started veteran Jacoby Brissett against the Dallas Cowboys, as the opening week starter, Kyler Murray, was sidelined with a foot injury. There was some hope leading up to the game that Murray would be able to start, but it became clear that wasn’t in the cards.

Reports then came out that, although he wasn’t going to be a starter, the Cardinals would explore working him onto the field in certain packages. Ultimately, Murray wasn’t healthy enough to go and was ruled out.

Brissett then led Arizona to a 27-17 victory over the Cowboys, and the Cardinals had one of their better offensive showings of the season. He was subsequently named the starting quarterback.

Now, Arizona has changed its mind on how to handle Murray’s injury and is deciding to put him on injured reserve rather than have him try and work his way back onto the field, according to one prominent insider around the league.

“Cardinals are placing QB Kyler Murray on injured reserve due to his foot injury, meaning he now will miss a minimum of four games. Cardinals say this will give Murray the chance to focus on rehabbing his foot injury and that he is committed to getting back as soon as possible,” reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Smart move by Arizona. Murray’s too valuable to risk on short-term gains. Letting him fully heal protects both his career and the team’s future stability,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Tough blow for Kyler and the Cards. Hoping it’s a quick rehab, but mid-foot sprains are sneaky. Brissett stepping up could be the spark they need,” someone else added.

“Tough call but the right one. Rushing back risks long-term damage. Giving Murray recovery time shows the Cardinals are thinking beyond just this season,” another fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see if Murray assumes the starting role again in his career.
