ALLEN PARK -- Christian Mahogany will be out until at least December due to a broken bone in his left leg. And the Detroit Lions have officially placed the starting left guard on injured reserve.
Mahogany suffered the injury in the the fourth quarter of the team’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. It was originally called a knee injury by the team during the game. But Mahogany was spotted on crutches with his left leg in a walking boot after the game this past Sunday.
The Lions are working through all of their option when it comes to filling the hole at left guard. Veteran guard Kayode Awosika is the top option off the bench, and the Lions sound like they will start there. But they are also considering Trystan Colon, and whether a move for Graham Glasgow from center to guard on the quest to patch things up.
Detroit’s offense has struggled to break big plays, convert on third down or run the ball efficiently this season. They are coming off a dreadful showing against the Vikings, where they ran for only 65 yards on 20 attempts and Jared Goff got sacked five times and hit another 10 times.
The Lions didn’t waste any time filling Mahogany’s spot on the 53-man roster. They signed linebacker Ty Summers from their practice squad in the corresponding move.
Summers has bounced between the roster and practice squad in recent weeks. He’s helped fill some snaps on special teams with Zach Cunningham on injured reserve and Malcolm Rodriguez working back from his ACL injury.
Rodriguez just had his 21-day return window opened last week. He hasn’t played since suffering his knee injury last November. Summers seems in line to handle another weekend of work on special teams while Rodriguez continues to work back to speed.
The Lions also signed three offensive linemen to their practice squad as they deal with injuries. Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell did not practice on Wednesday, as expected. So, they signed Jack Conley, Chris Hubbard and Netane Muti to help lift the load at practice this week.
