Rashid Shaheed is already winning over Seahawks fans before even taking the field

On a busy NFL trade deadline day, the Seattle Seahawks got involved by acquiring Rashid Shaheed from the New Orleans Saints. Many people praised the move, characterizing the deal as the rich getting richer since Seattle is already 6-2 with a top-five scoring offense. The Seahawks are now adding an explosive receiver to the mix who can run past anyone.

On Wednesday, Shaheed spoke with the media for the first time as a Seahawk, and he is already saying the kinds of things that will make fans love him. When asked about his expiring contract, and pending free agency this offseason, Shaheed simply responded that he sees Seattle as his long-term home and is “here to stay.”

Smiling, at times beaming, new #Seahawks wide receiver Rashid Shaheed says though this is the final half season of his contract he already, 4 hours after first entering the building, sees Seattle as his “long-term home.”

“No,” he says, “I’m here to stay.” ⁦@thenewstribune⁩ pic.twitter.com/H1vKcgnr42

Rashid Shaheed is already committing to the Seahawks beyond this season

A big reason why the Saints traded Shaheed is because he’s set to enter free agency this offseason, and was unlikely to re-sign with New Orleans. Additionally, the Saints are 1-8, so it would’ve been pointless to hold on to him since the team isn’t going to be a contender this season. The Seahawks, on the other hand, are shaping up to be a contender, so acquiring Shaheed made sense.

It now looks like Seattle will have the wideout for several years beyond this one. When Shaheed made that statement, he had only been in the building for a few hours, so it’s interesting to see how bought in he already is. Maybe the receiver observed the Seahawks from afar and liked what they had going on, and knew it’s a franchise he wanted to be with.

There’s also the Klint Kubiak element. Seattle’s offensive coordinator held the same position for New Orleans last season, and Shaheed was on track to have a career year before a knee injury ended his season. In six games last season, the wideout caught 20 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns. Shaheed was averaging an impressive 17.5 yards per catch, which is why his former quarterback Derek Carr says a QB can just throw the ball deep, and Shaheed will go get it.

Sam Darnold will now have that luxury, as Kubiak will return to drawing up plays for the big-play threat. For now, the focus for Shaheed will be on winning games, but he has made it clear his offseason focus will be re-signing with the Seahawks.
