Jamie Carragher was full of praise for this Liverpool star after the 1-0 win over Real Madrid
The Anfield icon was on media duty for CBS Sports during the Reds’ latest Champions League clash. Arne Slot made just one change from the side that started against Aston Villa in the Premier League, as Florian Wirtz returned to the starting line-up.
The German replaced Cody Gakpo on the left-wing, partnering Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike in attack.
Jamie Carragher names his best player of Liverpool’s season
Carragher held a post-match interview with Dominik Szoboszlai and introduced him to viewers and his colleagues in the studio as ‘Liverpool’s best player this season’.
“You as an individual have been absolutely fantastic and I think your level has gone up each season, and it feels like you’re one of the first names on the team sheet,” Carragher said while interviewing the Hungarian.
“Thank you, but it’s a team sport, as you know as well,” Szoboszlai responded. “I’m happy about my performance week-by-week and game-by-game but now I think we are back on a winning track and that’s the most important thing.
“I’m happy I can play at a level like that but I just need to keep going.”
Dominik Szoboszlai reveals ‘favourite position’ at Liverpool
Carragher addressed Szoboszlai’s versatility, particularly his stints at right-back this season.
The midfielder played four games as part of Slot’s defence earlier this season following an injury to Jeremie Frimpong. Liverpool won three of those four fixtures with Szoboszlai at right-back, including their clash with Arsenal in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old was crucial in that game, as he provided the winning goal from a stunning free-kick late on.
“My favourite position is actually a little bit deeper [in midfield],” Szoboszlai admitted. “I just want to be on the pitch, as you mentioned, I’ve played at right-back a couple of times but that’s not my position. But I will help the team wherever he [Slot] needs me.”
Liverpool’s win over Real Madrid moves them up to sixth in the Champions League table, with four games of the league stage still to play. The top eight teams will automatically qualify for the next round, while those who finish between ninth and 24th will face a play-off to determine who else will progress.
Liverpool topped the standings last season, winning seven of their eight games. However, their impressive performances in the league stage couldn’t inspire them beyond the round of 16, as they were knocked out by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Reds will face PSV in their next Champions League clash on November 26th, followed by meetings with Inter Milan, Marseille and Qarabag.
